Getting started with the new IBM Notes 9 browser plug in

Mat Newman  January 15 2013 15:42:27
Once you have an IBM Notes 9 client installed on your machine (under Windows) and selected the "IBM Notes 9 browser plug-in" during installation, you will find that both Internet Explorer and Firefox have the feature available.

Getting started is fairly easy:
  1. Install and configure IBM Notes on your machine,
  2. During the installation process, make sure you select "IBM Notes browser plug-in" from the list of installation options,
  3. Start and configure Notes as normal,
  4. Shut down IBM Notes (including Designer and Admin), the plug in won't start if you have them running,
  5. Open a browser window
  6. Type: "Notes:Home"
  7. Log in
  8. Voila!

Figure 1: The IBM Notes 9 browser plug-in home page
IBM Notes 9 browser plug-in Home Page

And yes, there's a workspace too!

Figure 2: The IBM Notes 9 browser plug-in workspace

And if you open a standard Notes application, you get the older style Notes interface (frameset/pages/outlines/etc) displayed nicely in a browser.

Figure 3: The IBM Notes 9 browser plug-in database screen

The really neat thing about the plug-in is that all of the traditional IBM Lotus Notes features and short-cuts (Ctrl+O, [Enter] to read, etc) work really well - it's almost as if you had a Notes client (well, actually - you DO!) running inside a web framework.  The only thing left to do is to spend some time updating those older database interfaces you might have laying around so they look good in the Browser plug-in wrapper.

Other tips:

Notes:Workspace will get you to the workspace.
Notes:Replication will open the replication page.

Sorry Mat, but as nice as this feature us, what's the point if you have to install a Notes client for it to work?

Or am I missing something obvious here?

@John - I've seen an installer for just the browser plug-in only, but I personally haven't had a chance to work with it yet.

i.e. 7. Often when create a new document in a new tab (for example, @Command([Compose];"tmpForm"), instead of notes:nourl link displays notes://Server/ReplicaID/nourl and opens Home db workspace...(

if the correct link to notes:nourl ->new document will be displayed...

How big is the plugin and how does it compare to others? The last I read was around 60MB. Are there any configuration choices to make besides selecting the plug-in and deselecting the normal Notes installation?

Well ... just installed the plug in by itself ...

and .. impressing .. you just have a complete notes Client working with FF 12 ... IE 10 ...

Complex databases are working as in the General Client ...

I only have some lags with enormous attachments ... Looks like it is cause you are working ON Server and NOT local.

Great Thing ... impressing me enormous cause some additional work is not to be done for "web-functionality".

Have to investigate for the used ports .. think it is always 1352 ... so this can be a Problem !

Thanks for post to Mat

- I've uninstalled 8.5.3 All clients

- Installed 9.0 All Clients(DOMINO_DESI_ADM_9.0_32B_WIN_EN)

- Start Installation of the plug-in (NOTES_BP_9.0_WIN_EN)

Installation stopped with popup that previous version of client(s) are detected.

How can I fix this ?

@9, Gino: Try the NICE tool from IBM to completely clean up anything left over from a previous install: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21459714

We don't have a lot of applications but we have a number of forms where this could be useful. We have a form that managers use to approve changes. With the plugin, can they access the form remotely (not on VPN) and click 'Approved' as if they were in the office? Do they need to be on the network and have the client installed?

Thanks,

Rob

Cant get this to work.

I can see the icon in FF, but as soon as I click, Notes starts and then crashes after a few seconds.

Same when clicking on a Notes-link in a mail iNotes.

Goes for both FF and IE.

Might try that cleanup tool.

I'm unable to find a standalone notes browser plug-in installer...

I downloaded Notes 9 Social Edition from Software Access Catalog but it doesn't contains any standalone notes browser plug-in installer.

Can someone direct me to a link where I can download a standalone notes browser plug-in installer.

Thanks

@11, Rob: Depends on your Network configuration. As long as there is direct HTTP access to the Domino Server hosting the application it works exactly the same as a basic Notes client, just running in a Browser.

@12, Max: Just open a browser and type the commands into the address bar as mentioned in this post; eg: "Notes:Home" will take you to the home screen, "Notes:Workspace" will open the workspace.

@13, Joaquin: The part numbers for the stand-alone installers are "IBM Notes Browser Plug-in Lite V9.0 Windows English (CIF0BEN)" and "IBM Notes Browser Plug-in V9.0 for Windows English (CIF0AEN)". The "Lite" version does not include it's own JVM. You should be able to find these on Partnerworld or Passport Advantage.

Hello Mat,

Thank you for the helpful article.

1) How can I change location when using the plug-in? With our 8.5.3 client we're using a separate location for each Office, Travel, VPN, and Island to help with replication settings.

Hi Mat,

Nice tool, this plug-in. I have an issue while typing an '@' anywhere in a New Memo.

In our Swiss-French keyboard, this is a combination of "AltGr + 2".

When typing the @, the window switches back to the previous tab in the browser (IE and FF)

Because of this, typing an email address is not easy (need to copy-paste it from somewhere). But the same thing also hapens in the text part of a mail.

Does someone else experience the same thing ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Coen.

Hi,

Can you please let know if active directory authentication will work with Notes Browser Plug in.

Also, is notes id file mandatory to be on the machibe where the plug in is installed?

Thanks

Hi all,

I have run the installation once more to install the browser plugin, but the url notes:home results in a totally white page. Same for workspace and replication.

Any ideas?

Mat:

Did you answer John's question, re: "... but as nice as this feature us, what's the point if you have to install a Notes client for it to work?"?

What's the point of the browser plugin if you have to have the Notes client software?

Thanks,

David

If I have to install notes client that for users it could be easy ride but for company who want to move out of licensing will not help.

I'm wondering the same as comments number 1 and 22. What is the point of this feature if the Notes client is required to use it? Under what circumstances is this actually useful?

Getting started with the new IBM Notes 9 browser plug in

While I think this is a cool feature, I cannot think of a place where it can be used in our production environment. We already get mail through iNotes, however, if the Web Browser Plugin install package included an "Install Workspace" option, it would be a game changer for us.

So, I'd have to agree with #1, #22 & #24. If I must install the Notes client in addition to the Web Browser Plugin just to get the workspace to work with the web browser, why not just run Notes at that point?

26Dave  04/15/2015 22:43:39
Getting started with the new IBM Notes 9 browser plug in

To answer #22 etc. about the install being in the Client install... While it is true that the browser plugin is available in the Client install, there is also a "Stand-alone" installer. File is called NOTES_PLG_LIT_901_WIN_EN.exe. It also is available in a larger version with FP attached. I am currently using NB_PLUGIN_901_FP2_WIN_WITH_JVM.exe

It appears to work great and saves a lot of drive space. Now, I am trying to get the thing to run without having any of the user's unique files on the local PC. We want to do this so they can sign on from other locations without having to do the setup on each PC.

We will be using browser plugin for our DR exercise to run our notes apps, is there a plugin that will not make use of the stored IDs locally to eliminate additional setup steps for each PC?

Im not referring to links inside of Notes opening with a specific browser, but with IE going unsupported, how would I "launch" Notes Browser Plug-in in Chrome rather than IE, even if Chrome is set as default?
