IBM Notes Traveler 9.0.1.1 don’t be fooled, this ain’t just a simple point release

Don't be fooled, IBM Notes Traveler 9.0.1.1 is more than a simple point release, a completely overhauled interface, new gesture based navigation and tight integration with IBM Connections and Sametime make this release a huge productivity enabler for Android users of Traveler.

I've been lucky enough to have had this version installed on my device for the past few weeks and I simply cannot understate how much my productivity has skyrocketed due to the tight integration of IBM Connections and Sametime into the entire interface.  Couple that with the awesome new contacts app, the ability to overlay device calendars in your Traveler calendar and the simplified navigation with new gestures and IBM Notes Traveler 9.0.1.1 is - I believe - worthy of an entire new version number.

Here's a summary of the new features:

Available NOW on the Android App Store, download it HERE: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lotus.sync.traveler&hl=en

Enjoy!

Do we have to upgrade anything on the Traveler Server, or is it just the Traveler client?

It must be a client version, there is nothing on Passport Advantage..

@1, Hogne: It's a client release mate. One of the great things about the new Android Traveler client is that it identifies the server version of Traveler and will disable features that are not available (eg: Enabling Out-Of-Office). This client will work with all versions of Traveler back to 8.5.3.

An updated Traveler Server version is in the pipeline, I understand that it is slated for a Q3 release.

@2: Thanks, Mat! I've installed the new version on my Android now, and it looks fantastic!

We are running 8.5.3 on the server but are planning to upgrade. Do we need to upgrade the server to 9.0.1 to get the Sametime and Connections functionality you mention in the presentation? I couldn't find it on my phone.

Thanks for the slides, been waiting for this release since Connect 2014:) it is a big step forward !

But I find one thing missing from the contacts app.

When going directory look-up, it only comes back with the email address. In the earlier version , you got much more information, like telephone number and department, I want that back.

Is there anything I'm missing ?

PS. I added Active sync settings and then the directory look-up displays the missing information in the native contact app, not the Traveler app.

To be clear, the additional features require the IBM Connections and IBM Sametime apps to be installed on the device. You can also get these from the Play Store:

Connections: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ibm.lotus.connections.mobile&hl=en

Sametime: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ibm.android.sametime&hl=en

When all of these apps are logged in, they leverage one another to provide the full functionality demonstrated in my deck.

Thanks for the reply, but it makes no sense to me, I just want to search for users in my corporate directory, like I did in the previous version and get the information I need, if I need all the extra services to do that, I'm afraid I will move to the native client :(

Hello. I have the same problem. In new Contacts App,

when I go to look-up people of my internal organization, it only comes back with the email address. In the earlier version , you got much more information, like telephone number and department. With local contacts all information is shown. But with lookup contacts it doesn´t run.

This functionality is very important for my users.

I must change to previous versión.

I don´t have installed Sametime nor Connections in my organization.

Same problem here, got a call from our field service guys saying that can't call anyone because they can't lookup phone numbers from NAB now. I'd say IBM dropped the ball on this one.

Thanks for the heads-up Mat!

I'm lovin' the new interface, but I have to say... It is an absolute dog starting up! I have to wait upwards of 15 seconds for the mail to appear when I first open it. I assume (perhaps a dangerous thing to do?!) that it has something to do with the new 'refresh' facility, but it's pretty annoying. Where in the past the Inbox would appear instantly when I opened it, I observe a significant delay using this new version.

I'll play with the features to see if it's something I have done, but I suspect it is just a version thing.

Cheers mate! T.

Notified by the Dev team that an updated Traveler client including a fix for the Contacts lookup is now online.

@13, Terry: I'm not seeing that mate, what device are you using and do you have the widgets on your home screen?

Extremely slow performance

G'day Mat,

I am using a Samsung S3 mobile, with the 'Mail' and 'Calendar' icons are certainly on my home screen. The calendar app comes up instantly as it always has. The 'Mail' (Inbox) however, takes a minimum of 15 seconds to appear when clicked - very strange!

Just wondering if you have experienced any email formatting issues with this update?

All my emails being sent out arrive without paragraph spacing with all test arriving in a very difficult to read block of text including my signature and disclaimer statement.

It is really quite ugly and unmanageable.

Thanks for any insights.

Amazing update indeed. Mat thanks for the great stack of slides...

One problem though with sametime integration. I have sametime client installed and community connectivity is working right. However, in the traveler mail client, I cannot get the sametime chat icon to appear. I am using the same LDAP for sametime and the same domino dir for traveler. Any ideas?

Just a small problem with this update. If you rely on Traveler for your phone contacts (yes, it has been possible), be prepared to lose the ability to add contacts from the phone dialer. Discussed this with IBM support and the devs are going to add the functionality back "sometime later this quarter" - although not critical, this add a touch of awkwardness we've learned to love in Lotus products.

I've the same problems like Mark (Post 19). The first time, when I open the Mail application, it takes about 30 seconds until I see something.

Device: Google Nexus 5

I've deinstalled the App and delete all data, reinstalled it, but no difference.

Any ideas?

Some of my users complain about the same issue as post #19 & # 28 - It takes forever (at least 15sec) to open the inbox, be it from the widget, from the icon, or from the new mail notification.

Will this issue be addressed? Is there a known work-around I didn't find :)? Any ideas?

They have Samsung S3 and Samsung S4.

I cannot reproduce this behaviour on my Nexus 5 nor on an HTC Desire S.

Other than that, the upgrade is spot-on. A few issues with picture integration yet but getting there.

Cheers!

Submitted IBM PMR and the response is that the integration with IBM Connections is not ready yet. So strange that it promotes the integration in the Traveler App of Google Play Store but it does not work.

I do not have delay issues with inbox, but have it with new Contacts app. IT gets around 10-15 sec. to display (or download?) contacts. Also there are no more possibility to add new contact from phone dialer to Traveler contacts. I have to Copy phone number and then open Traveler Contacts app, make new record and paste copied number. Not too comfortable!

Hi Mat,

This update is really insane. Opening/downloading every mail is pain. Calendar and ToDo is the same. Not even new update has fixed it. Delay on every operation is huge.

Please do something about it, application like this is useless. I had no problems with previous version. Using HTC X One.

Does anyone know anyway of adding a 2nd email address to Traveler? I go to add an account for traveler, nothing happens, other email apps allow a 2nd email address.

Had this issue for quite a while and its not discussed that often.

Now at Android version 9.0.1.5 and when replying for forwarding a message, original content shows on the screen, but is gone in when recipient gets the message. It would appear to be an issue with the client; however, IBM steadfastly says, "Upgrade the server (8.5.3) to 9.0.1.16", which is something I'm not really prepared to do.
