MYTHBUSTING Outlook IS NOT better than Lotus Notes, pt 10: I’m so dumb, I don’t know how to handle groups

Recently I completed some Lotus Notes training for some very experienced Outlook users.  These folks weren't run-of-the-mill end-users, they were serious IT guys; in fact, they ran the help desk, so they knew what they were doing.

At the conclusion of the 'This is Notes' phase of the training, I needed them to populate their inbox's fairly quickly, so I had them all send some messages to one another using a Public Group that they were all a member of, and then reply to those messages.

At that point I wanted to demonstrate the power of the 'All Documents' view.

I couldn't.

None of the replies that anyone had sent appeared in the 'All Documents' view of Lotus Notes!

After my #WTH moment, I asked one of the guys reply to a message sent to the group again, and watched him choose the "Send Only" option!

Microsoft Outlook connected to Exchange is not clever enough to identify that you are a member of a group, and therefore sends you a copy of a message they YOU yourself have SENT to the GROUP, so if you 'Send and Save' you end up with DUPLICATES of the same message!

Lotus Notes knows how to handle groups. Has done for years.

The thing about this very simple EMAIL feature is that stuff you have SENT will appear in your SENT folder in Lotus Notes, along with your All Documents view indicating it was a message you SENT, WITHOUT creating duplicate entries like Outlook does.

I was astounded that Outlook wasn't clever enough as a MAIL CLIENT to perform this simple operation, but then again ... it's just another example of how Lotus Notes is a superior product.

Outlook: I'm so dumb, I don't know how to handle groups!

So the opposite is true then. If I send a copy of an email to a group I am part of in Notes and do not keep sent mail then I never have a copy. Just a reminder.

@Chris: If I want to know which mail I have sent to a group I just have to look in my "Sent" folder. If I understand you correctly you have to look in your inbox and search for mails sent by yourself? And if you send a mail to the wrong group the mail is "gone" if you are not belong to this group?

How about the fact, that Lotus Notes still incorrectly uses Return-Path addresses when you click Reply All? If you are subscribed to mailing list group and you click Reply All in Lotus, you get unsubscribed from the mailing list because it thinks that you are a bouncer. That's how "wonderful" Lotus works.

No MYTH Outlook is greatest

See partial list of what LN can't do and is walk in park in Outlook

1. Fuzzy search of group email addresses is pathetic.

Want to search all mail addrs with #Yahoofriends, coming up BUNNY

2. In Purge mail folder a recipient is erroneously called as sender (All my sent mail emails are marked as "Sender"= "recipient ")

3. Double-clicking in the received email body to select any term/word opens the mail in reply mode (so freaking dumb!)

4. Accepted meetings if are changed by chair happen to conflict with your another meeting, as participant you rejecting it is nightmare, no visible menu, one has to look around for it.

5. Option to counter proposal is dumb option when ppl don't get correct view of invitees pre-scheduled meetings....Don't let user choose "Prevent Counter" option

6. Multiple changes to meetings before one accepts doesn't always gets processed automatically and it becomes nightmare to find out which one is correct, and less spoken abt such meetings integration with BB.

7. No reply all option from sent folder or meeting invite

@Chetan: How OLD is the version of Notes you're on? From reading your post, not only do you have an old version, it also sounds like you have a customised mail database as well.

1) Fuzzy Searching a group? Enter more than four characters...

2) What is a "Purge Mail Folder"?? I have a "Trash" and it says "Who".

3) Double clicking ANY record in Notes will put it into edit mode.

4) Again ... which version?

5) There's been a prevent counter option for years.

6) Again, there's been automatic processing of multiple meeting changes for years.

7) Open the email.

I'm confused. Today I sent an email to the email group that consists of my whole branch. I received that email in my inbox. And it is in my sent items. So I have two copies of the email now. Isn't that what you said Lotus Notes doesn't do? Or have I misinterpreted what you are saying?
