MYTHBUSTING Outlook IS NOT better than Lotus Notes, pt 6: Work from Anywhere, Any App, Any Time, Even while off-line

Following on from last weeks when the Internet disappears thank heaven for Lotus Notes post, today's Mythbusting session demonstrates how to create Replica's.

Lotus Notes has an amazing capability called Replication, which will allow you to take ANYTHING, NOT just your MAIL (Calendar/To-Dos/Contacts/Notebook) off-line, so you can work from Anywhere, Any App, Any Time, Even when Disconnected from a Network and regardless of the speed of your connection or even if your server is available.

There's also some great information over on Alan Hamilton's blog which discusses Lotus Notes Managed Mail Database Replicas, a feature that was introduced in Lotus Notes 8.5.2:

If you are using Notes 8.5.2 client you could consider adding the following lines to your NOTES.INI file (and restarting Notes) to get managed replicas going:

CacheMail=3
OutgoingMailSendThreshold=1
ReplicateOnNewMail=1
CacheDBInitialFullDoc=30
DocAutoRetrieve=2
FailoverSilent=1
($PrefRepIDDefFullText)=1

Alternatively ask your Domino Administrator to set up a policy to enable this.

For those who are unaware of what the setting above do, or what happens when your Admin applies a Managed Replica to your Lotus Notes client via policy, it's quite simple:

A Managed replica no longer "waits" for scheduled replication to replicate with your server.  When your Notes client see's that you have new Mail on the server, Replication is initiated IMMEDIATELY for your mail database.

Work faster. Work from Anywhere. Replication - it's ALL about the Apps.

Enjoy  ;-)

Errm, Outlook, by it's design, replicates without any programming, extra apps, or having to remember to do it.

We use Lotus Notes at work, and it is the single most frustrating, time consuming and unstable program I have to endure.

Using it off of the corporate network (3G etc), is just torture.

@1, Daren: That's the point of this post, to show you how easy it is to set up replication so there is no reliance on network speed to access your apps. Hopefully your Notes admin has configured off-line access for you to get the true benefit of this feature across all of your databases, and not just the PIM features that you mention Outlook is capable of.

You can have Notes...all day...take all of it, please. Daren, try supporting this behemoth in less developed countries. Thankfully we're finally moving away from it. You have no idea how giddy people get to learn Notes is going away...at least as an email client. Everyone from those who have to support it to the enduser's who not used any other client. Go figure.
