Mobile web-sites make BRILLIANT Lotus Notes side-bar widgets, ESPECIALLY when the mobile site involved is IBM CONNECTIONS, here’s how to do it

Yesterday's #TipOfTheDay was how to access IBM Connections in 'miniature' form by accessing your IBM Connections site with the addition of /mobile at the end of your address, like:

http://greenhouse.lotus.com/mobile

A little while ago I wrote how many sites designed for mobile/smart-phone/tablet access actually make  GREAT Lotus Notes side-bar widgets.

Well, combine this concept, and the brilliant mobile version of IBM Connections and what do you have - Lotus Notes fully Connected, right there in your side-bar :-)

The following slides show the steps to setting this up:

Enjoy!

Worth pointing out that this doesn't work on the Notes client on Windows, as it uses IE as the embedded browser for widgets - you just get a message saying 'Connections Mobile does not support this platform.'

Unless, of course, you follow this tip: { Link } :)

Matt,

This is so simple to do, but also so effective. Great tip!

Any ideas on how to do an automated deployment of this widget to users ?

@1, Matt: Finally! Something that works on Linux and not on Windows ;-) Kidding. Followed this through and tested on Win XP, Vista and 7 with Lotus Notes 8.5.3, the key line required from the cross-link on Stephan's site http://www.wissel.net/blog/d6plinks/SHWL-8M4KG2 you've mentioned is adding the following line to your plugin_customization.ini file:

com.ibm.rcp.rte/RTEBasedBrowser=XULRunner

Once this has been added, don't check the "Authentication required" check box in step 4, then in step 5, hit the drop-down next to "Open With" and choose Xulrunner as the browser. It won't load in the preview, but it will then work in the side-bar. You can save your password later while logging-in through the side-bar widget.

@2, Vaughan: Thanks mate - the simple ones are often the most powerful :-)

@3, Tinus: Once you have the widget in your "My Widgets" side-bar panel, right-hand click the icon for the new widget and choose "Publish to Catalog". This will publish it to your corporate widget Catalog, which you can then assign a category to. Using a Desktop Policy, you can choose which widgets to push to users by Category. HTH.

Matt

Excellent job, really simple - using your post as a starting point, I did the same thing for our internal IBM Connections deployment. Looks very very shiny.

As ever, I thank you, Dave
