I agree - Notes (& Connections)are fantastic Social Business solutions - That deserve a wider audience..........Overview

Large and midrange organizations are being pulled by two opposing forces . On one hand, the business need for mobile Social Business applications which can be rapidly developed and even more rapidly changed ‘on demand’. On the other, the business requirement for continually analyzing an enterprise’s data..

Enterprise data standards and architectures are built primarily upon a structured (normally relational) data type while truly collaborative Social Business applications and processes generally require a semi-structured data type with collaboration built in. While there have been some ‘bridges’ established between these data types there has until now never been a integrated architecture..

Business Analytics Imperative

Enterprise I/T is focused on standards and architectures for data which will work for the entire organization. Those standards must ensure that the proper levels of security, legal governance and control are in place for any data sanctioned for inclusion in the comprehensive business analytics and executive decision-making of the enterprise. Traditionally, those standards and requirements have been managed by a small number of specialists who already struggled to deliver what was required. Now, the advent of Social Business imperatives is exacerbating their situation further by driving demand for a whole new class of mobile applications and data.

Social Business Imperative

Departments and their employees have high expectations for I/T responsiveness and little patience for Enterprise I/T considerations. They are used to working with ‘on demand’ SMARTphone technology, SMARTphone apps and Social media in their day-to- day lives and are not prepared to wait for the systems and data they need. Therefore, given no business sanctioned alternatives, they will increasingly opt toward using their phones and tablets in ‘un-authorized’ ways to expeditiously solve business problems at work despite the exposures this brings to the security, governance and control of data. To satisfy their requirements within the business construct, a solution must have capabilities for Rapid Application Development (RAD) and modification, SMART mobile device support, semi-structured data types (to deliver genuine collaboration), and full integration with the established Enterprise I/T structured data systems already in place.

IBM Lotus Notes was the first and to-date most successful NoSQL database designed to meet the requirements for a Social Business /Collaborative database with both semi-structured data and a powerful Rapid Application Development capability. But in many ways it was ahead of it’s time since despite ascending to a market-leading install base , its reputation has been tarnished due to the perennial issues of semi-structured vs structured data integration.

Since its acquisition in 1995, IBM has continued to invest in Lotus Notes with recent outlays topping $1billion as it developed supporting collaborative and Social Business Applications.

IBM Connections (which entry level comes free with the latest version of Lotus Notes) is now widely acknowledged to be the industry’s leading Social Business platform (and business alternative to Facebook). It, along with X Pages development tools (for accelerated Notes Rapid Application Development) and Lotus Traveler (for Notes mobile capability) have positioned Lotus Notes to solve many of the fundamental economic and productivity issues enterprises are facing globally – provided the issue of data integration is resolved.

Data Modeler

For the past few years, Sun & Son has been working with the IBM CIO office, the IBM Information Management Lab, IBM Cloud Computing’s CTO and Lotus on designing and developing a middleware solution that supports a comprehensive and open architecture to resolve the aforementioned data integration issues. The result is Sun & Son’s Data Modeler architecture with JDBC for Notes.
